Achieving success in male dominated industries

I used to think that women’s inequality is less of an issue in Russia than in the West. To be fair, it’s not that this issue doesn’t exist, it’s more about the awareness of it. I suppose it happens partly because women’s understanding of gender roles in Russia is more aligned with what men think and partly due to our country’s Soviet background. In the USSR, it was hard to imagine feminism and other expressions commonly known in Western Europe and North America become mainstream.
Approximately ninety percent of the top management within companies have been represented by men for decades. Recently, however, there has been a significant shift towards having more female-led teams.
Having lived abroad for 7 years, I am now more familiar with how international women feel about their career paths and opportunities. The two main industries in which the disproportion between men and women is the most noticeable are finance and tech. I have mainly worked in tech and from the finance side, I have gotten familiar with the fundraising side of this industry in terms of venture capital and private equity. However, now that I’m actively involved in the fintech community, I speak with many people who work in traditional finance.
